Community enrichment is an essential aspect of Sweet Bloom’s work.  Read along as Tavia shares how Sweet Bloom gives back to the Bragg Creek community through floral design.

Recently I was asked by the Fine Arts Team at Banded Peak School to be an artist in residence during their Fine Arts Day. A day where local artisans come together to teach school aged children their art. For Sweet Bloom this was an immediate YES!  I could not imagine a more fulfilling community enrichment idea…teaching students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 the love of floral design.

So, on January 19th, students at Banded Peak School began crafting their own Magical Fairy Gardens!  Using fresh greens, brilliant blooms, magical crystals, and of course a little bit of fairy dust, students created individual gardens for their fairies to enjoy!

Coming prepared for your first bloom consultation is a key step in beginning a successful design process for your wedding.  I encourage my brides to be knowledgeable about:

1. Falling in Love: Tell us about you!  We love hearing your love story, how you met and captured each others hearts!  Having an insight into your story allows us to add personal touches to create unique designs specifically for you.
2. Bloom Loves: Share the blooms you love! Perhaps it is a childhood bloom that caught your eye, the first bloom given to you by your fiancé, or a bloom picture that captured your heart (do not worry if you are unsure of the names, use photographs to capture your bloom wishes).
3. Bloom Dislikes: Share if you have any blooms that you dislike or would not like to have in you designs.
4. Event Vision: Walk your floral designer through how you envision the set-up, decor, and atmosphere of the wedding. Carefully selected stems can support and enhance your vision.
5. Wedding Colours: Share your accent colours with you designer to insure the blooms chosen compliment your design ideas.
6. Event Date:  Have a confirmed wedding date selected so you can reserve the date with your floral designer.  Sweet Bloom is unique as we only accept one wedding each weekend so we can provide the best possible support on the big day.
7. Wedding Party: Have an idea of the number of people in your wedding party.  This allows your designer to choose an appropriate number of stems to make each bouquet and boutonniere.
8. Wedding Gown: Share the style of your dress. Dress styles help form the bouquet size and shape so it is a perfect compliment.
9. Bridesmaid Dresses: share the style and colour of these dresses.
10. Bloom Accents: Think through where you would like extra bloom accents for the ceremony and reception.  Bring along pictures or share your Pinterest board to tell about your wishes.

Having the time to think through a few details prior to your arrival makes the first consultation more valuable.

Finding the perfect flower wholesaler is an essential element to making Sweet Bloom successful. To be honest, the first time I ever stepped into a flower wholesaler was when I started Sweet Bloom. This experience was everything I hoped it would be…  tall racks filled with shinning vases, ribbons, accessories and tools. BUT then I went to the cooler to view the blooms… I have never seen a cooler so large, bursting with colours, endless textures, vibrant scents, and blooms for as far as I could see! This truly was a dream come true. I was in flower heaven!  Someone pinch me please!!

Vintage/rustic/nostalgic… are common words to describe the ever growing vintage theme for weddings.  From vintage milk vases, to repurposed mason jars, and old tea cups…the vintage theme has grown exponentially.

My favourite part of being the lead designer of Sweet Bloom is the ability to explore and choose all the design elements.  When designing for Anne and Rej’s summer 2014 wedding, the vintage theme was evident in all aspects of the bride’s planning.  She hoped to have a bridal bouquet that reflected a vintage feel and was unique to her personal taste.  I selected garden roses in soft pink and white accented with eryngium. These beautiful, delicate, peony structured roses offered a perfect match for the vintage theme.  The bouquet was accented with white wax flower and seeded eucalyptus to complete the design.

My studio: The quiet space is filled with natural sunlight, delicate scents, beautiful colours, crisp vases sparkling in the light, and a vintage dressing table acts as my design workspace. This is where the creativity flows and the magic begins.

Blooms: Each flowers unique size, form, texture, and colour help support the creation of my bouquets and arrangements. They speak to the people who are being celebrated and the special events that are about to occur. They add a special touch of art and beauty to highlight the location, guests, and send a warm message to everyone who is part of the celebration.

I share my favourite bloom from childhood.

The first bloom that ever caught my eye and stayed in my heart is the Tulip. My dad always had clusters of tulip bulbs planted in hopes for their beauty to show in early spring. It is always the first bloom to brighten my garden and bring the hope that winter is nearly over. It truly is a very unique, simple bloom that signals the beginning of spring, brings colour to a new season, and makes me smile every time I see it. Still to this day, despite all the beautiful flowers I design with, the tulip is my favourite flower to have in my home. Even at 35 years old, my dad and husband often surprise me with fresh-cut tulips! Tulips bring back fond memories of my childhood and make me feel like a little girl!

I am looking forward to designing wedding bouquets with this beautiful bloom!

*Scientific Name: Tulipa (I almost named my floral design company Tulipa)

*Meaning: cheerful thoughts (yellow), forgiveness (white), royalty (purple), perfect love (red)

“So, Why is floral design my dream?” It all started like this…

As a little girl, my father was always designing a beautiful summer garden full of vibrant colours, delicate scents and continual blooms. I just adored how a little love and attention could grow such amazing wonders… Seriously, how can something so beautiful start as a simple, somewhat unimpressive seed? I wanted to be part of this transformation… from dirt to bloom.

The cool soil, warm sunshine and fresh air brought me to a place of enjoyment and wonder which inspired me to learn about new blooms and design techniques. I knew I needed to be around flowers ALL the time.

And so I did… endless hours designing my own garden spaces, sessions at local horticultural groups, designing for friends and local floral shops coupled with my extensive knowledge of gardening brought me to a time where I felt confident to begin Sweet Bloom.

An enjoyable journey filled with many firsts!
