Calgary Wedding Flowers | Giving Back to Our Community

Community enrichment is an essential aspect of Sweet Bloom’s work.  Read along as Tavia shares how Sweet Bloom gives back to the Bragg Creek community through floral design.

Recently I was asked by the Fine Arts Team at Banded Peak School to be an artist in residence during their Fine Arts Day. A day where local artisans come together to teach school aged children their art. For Sweet Bloom this was an immediate YES!  I could not imagine a more fulfilling community enrichment idea…teaching students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 the love of floral design.

So, on January 19th, students at Banded Peak School began crafting their own Magical Fairy Gardens!  Using fresh greens, brilliant blooms, magical crystals, and of course a little bit of fairy dust, students created individual gardens for their fairies to enjoy!

As always, it takes a team to make this type of event possible.  Firstly, Thank You to Kelly!  Kelly is our bloom specialist who provided the blooms for our special event.  Thank you to our community volunteer, Rose, and Banded Peak’s teacher, Karen, who spent the day supporting our artists.  Finally, a warm Thank You to the Banded Peak Fine Arts Team for inviting Sweet Bloom to participate in this wonderful event!

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Top 10 Preparing For Your Bloom Consultation

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Preparing For Your Bloom Consultation

Sweet Bloom | Summer Bridal Bouquet

Read along as Tavia shares the Top 10 pieces of information to bring along to your first bloom consultation.

Coming prepared for your first bloom consultation is a key step in beginning a successful design process for your wedding.  I encourage my brides to be knowledgeable about:

  1. Falling in Love: Tell us about you!  We love hearing your love story, how you met and captured each others hearts!  Having an insight into your story allows us to add personal touches to create unique designs specifically for you.
  2. Bloom Loves: Share the blooms you love! Perhaps it is a childhood bloom that caught your eye, the first bloom given to you by your fiancé, or a bloom picture that captured your heart (do not worry if you are unsure of the names, use photographs to capture your bloom wishes).
  3. Bloom Dislikes: Share if you have any blooms that you dislike or would not like to have in you designs.
  4. Event Vision: Walk your floral designer through how you envision the set-up, decor, and atmosphere of the wedding. Carefully selected stems can support and enhance your vision.
  5. Wedding Colours: Share your accent colours with you designer to insure the blooms chosen compliment your design ideas.
  6. Event Date:  Have a confirmed wedding date selected so you can reserve the date with your floral designer.  Sweet Bloom is unique as we only accept one wedding each weekend so we can provide the best possible support on the big day.
  7. Wedding Party: Have an idea of the number of people in your wedding party.  This allows your designer to choose an appropriate number of stems to make each bouquet and boutonniere.
  8. Wedding Gown: Share the style of your dress. Dress styles help form the bouquet size and shape so it is a perfect compliment.
  9. Bridesmaid Dresses: share the style and colour of these dresses.
  10. Bloom Accents: Think through where you would like extra bloom accents for the ceremony and reception.  Bring along pictures or share your Pinterest board to tell about your wishes.

Having the time to think through a few details prior to your arrival makes the first consultation more valuable.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Sweet Bloom Experience!

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Spring

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Spring

“Read along as Tavia shares her excitement for Spring blooms!”

Spring is in the air here in Calgary, Alberta. The warm air, gentle breeze, chirping birds, and the little pops of green that appear in my garden make this my favourite time of year. I just adore this time of transformations and new beginnings. It rejuvenates my soul!

When I am not in the design studio, I can often be caught searching in my garden for any sign of life appearing in the dirt. It is hard to express the feeling I have when I discover the first green shoot breaking through the soil and bringing colour to a bland landscape.  It brings joy, excitement and reminds me of the love I have for anything blooming.

Here is the first little bloom to appear in my garden. Feel free to leave a comment and picture of your favourite Spring sight!

Read along as Sweet Bloom shares the best “behind the scenes” partner!

Finding the perfect flower wholesaler is an essential element to making Sweet Bloom successful. In order to uphold my policy of providing high quality products to all of my clients, I have continued to find connections with local wholesalers who are knowledgeable, experienced and care about their clients.

To be honest, the first time I ever stepped into a flower wholesaler was when I started Sweet Bloom. This experience was everything I hoped it would be…  tall racks filled with shinning vases, ribbons, accessories and tools. BUT then I went to the cooler to view the blooms… I have never seen a cooler so large, bursting with colours, endless textures, vibrant scents, and blooms for as far as I could see! This truly was a dream come true. I was in flower heaven!  Someone pinch me please!!

The entire experience comes down to the quality of the products and the people working at the wholesale. Today I highlight KELLY!  Kelly is a talented, experienced and immensely knowledgeable sales associate who is committed to supporting her clients.  She answers endless questions, teaches me new things on a daily basis, and ALWAY delivers the top quality blooms for Sweet Bloom.  She is an integral part of making Sweet Bloom successful.

When you are in awe of the custom designs created by Sweet Bloom remember the behind the scenes partners who contribute to making the Sweet Bloom experience unique.

Thank you Kelly!

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Bouquet Tips

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Bouquet Tips

Read along as Sweet Bloom shares design secrets for everyday bouquets!

A quick stop to grab groceries often takes you through the supermarket floral department. The bright colours and delicate scents persuade you.  They are relatively inexpensive bouquets, a quick grab, and an easy way to send messages of love, thoughtfulness and thanks.  BUT… do you ever struggle to place them into a vase and have them look nicely arranged?  The blooms flop to one side, evidence of large gaps appear, lack of greenery makes the bouquet sparse….and ultimately they do not look as attractive as you had hoped.  If this sounds like an experience you had then read on for some of my design tips.

Here are a few tricks to make the blooms bright and attractive:

1. Separate each bloom type and display as small clusters. I love reusing small glass bottles or jars for this look.

2.  Arrange all the blooms as if you were designing a bridal bouquet. Once complete add twine or ribbon to secure, cut stems to one length, and place in a vase. This will maintain the shape and display beautifully.

3. Cut fresh greenery from your own garden to fill in the spaces.

* Most importantly, love the design you create as every artist has their own eye for beauty*

I hope your next bouquet is everything you hoped it would be!

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Vintage Weddings

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Vintage Weddings

Read along as Tavia highlights Sweet Bloom’s favourite vintage design of the 2014 wedding season.

Vintage/rustic/nostalgic… are common words to describe the ever growing vintage theme for weddings.  From vintage milk vases, to repurposed mason jars, and old tea cups…the vintage theme has grown exponentially.

My favourite part of being the lead designer of Sweet Bloom is the ability to explore and choose all the design elements.  When designing for Anne and Rej’s summer 2014 wedding, the vintage theme was evident in all aspects of the bride’s planning.  She hoped to have a bridal bouquet that reflected a vintage feel and was unique to her personal taste.  I selected garden roses in soft pink and white accented with eryngium. These beautiful, delicate, peony structured roses offered a perfect match for the vintage theme.  The bouquet was accented with white wax flower and seeded eucalyptus to complete the design.

Calgary Wedding Flowers |Bookshelf 2

From my Bookshelf Part 2: A look an recent wedding trends through literature.

Featured Book:

“Vintage Wedding Style” by Elizabeth Demos

Every wedding season brings about new ideas and design elements for unique creations. A recent wedding bloom trend is the addition of scabiosa pods into bouquets, boutonnieres, and centre pieces. Once an equally attractive flower, the scabiosa pod adds a slight brown/silver colour while making a strong visual element. Perfect as a small addition to bloom arrangements or clustered together for a dominant effect.

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Favourite Outfit

Calgary Wedding Flowers | Favourite Outfit

My must have style choices to begin the design process…

Hearing personal comments about my last post has made me giggle. Besides the love of seeing a behind the scenes photograph I did receive a few comments about my “cute” attire. Here are some little tidbits about my favourite outfit:

Apron: Lightly quilted and delicately accented with tiny flowers… it is old, soft to touch and slightly coloured by past blooms. This sweet apron is a must have when I design. It has a little story…. As a young girl this was a home-made Christmas gift from my sweet Aunt Sharon. It reminds me of my childhood and her love and encouragement to follow my dreams. To me, it is PERFECT!

Slippers: Well, it can be a little cool in my design studio. So, my toes do get a touch cold. These Canadian made, soft, wool slippers are a must have as I immerse myself into designing.

This is me in all my design glory!
